Answer to Question 1

We selectively kill harmful organisms trying to leave beneficial
organisms. This is pasteurization. If we sterilized the soil we would be killing all
organisms.

Answer to Question 2

While soil tests do not always include all micronutrients, foliar tests do.
Soil tests, however, include pH and soluble salt analysis while foliar tests do not.
Soil tests indicate the amount of nitrogen in the nitrate and ammoniacal forms
while foliar tests only indicate the total amount of nitrogen. A soil test gives the
present status of nutrients and is predicting whether they can be taken up by the
crop. A foliar test determines nutrients success fully taken up but tends to give a
history of uptake rather than present availability.
