Answer to Question 1

The Merrill system involves 4 pastures each of which is grazed 12 months and then not grazed for 4 months. After a complete 4 year cycle, each pasture will have received a period of non-use during the different seasons of the year. This system is well suited to rangelands where effective precipitation for perennial forage growth can occur anytime during the year, such as central Texas.
