Phenylalanine level is checked to screen for this disorder. A normal phenylalanine level in a newborn is 1.2 to 3.4 mg/dL. A result of 1.0 mg/dL is a negative test result. Positive, inconclusive, and requiring rescreening at age 6 weeks are incorrect.
