  a. Clean the eyes by washing from the inner canthus to the outer canthus.
  b. Turn the head to the side when flossing and brushing the teeth.
  c. Following mouth care, immediately turn the patient to a prone position.

Answer to Question 1

C
After the nurse provides mouth care, the comatose patient should be kept in the lateral position with the head turned toward the side for 30 to 60 minutes. This posture prevents the pooling of secretions and aspiration. Each of the other actions would be appropriate when caring for a comatose patient.
