Post cardiac catheterization care includes monitoring vital signs and ECG every 15 minutes; assess laboratory results to include complete blood count and coagulation studies; apply pressure to the vascular access site; keep the head of the bed at a 30 degree angle or lower and keep the patient on bedrest for 4 to 6 hours to allow complete sealing of the arterial puncture site; assess the puncture site for any bleeding, hematoma, or absence of pulse; assess the patient's pulses bilaterally lower extremities; encourage hydration; monitor intake and output; and monitor for delayed reaction to dye used as contrast medium.
