Answer to Question 1

A
During the resistance stage of the general adaptation syndrome, an individual attempts to defend against the stressor through the fight-or-flight response. The body becomes physiologically ready to defend itself by either fighting or running away from the stressor. Hormones such as adrenaline and norepinephrine cause biologic changes. The local adaptation syndrome is the physiological response to a stressor affecting a specific part of the body. It is a temporary process that resolves when the traumatic area is restored to its steady state. Homeostasis is an equilibrium between physiological, psychological, sociocultural, intellectual, and spiritual needs.

Answer to Question 2

The word rehabilitation first appeared in medical literature during World War I, when thousands of war veterans returned home with amputations and other wounds. During this time, the government and the medical community recognized the importance of helping disabled veterans readapt their lives in their communities and to be vocationally productive.
