The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation sponsored the Quality and Safety Education for Nurses (QSEN) initiative to respond to reports about safety and quality patient care by the IOM. The QSEN initiative encompasses the competencies of patient-centered care, teamwork and collaboration, evidence-based practice, quality improvement, safety, and informatics. Health policy is health related issues at the government level, not a competency.

Practice developments are not a characteristic of a profession, but are essential for nurses to stay current by gaining new knowledge about the latest research and practice developments.
