If the patient can condense the enormous amount of information on the Internet and determine what is reliable, she has a reasonable degree of health literacy. Motivation, the rationale for the patient's preference, and trust are not related to health literacy, although they might be important pieces of information to obtain.

Not being able to read well and not being able to afford medications are certainly barriers to explore, but they are not related to health literacy.
