In confusion, the client manifests reduced awareness, is easily distracted, easily startled by sensory stimuli, and alternates between drowsiness and excitability. In locked-in syndrome, the client displays full consciousness, sleepwake cycles are present, and auditory and visual function and emotions are preserved.
