There are two primary causes of digoxin toxicity: improper dosing, and hypokalemia secondary to the concurrent administration of diuretics. The most obvious cause of toxicity is the admin-istration of too large a dose of digoxin.

In addition to treating heart failure, cardiac glycosides such as digoxin are occasionally used to control the ventricular rate of atrial fibrillation, atrial flutter, and paroxysmal atrial tachycardia (PAT).
