A patient has begun taking buspirone (BuSpar) for the management of generalized anxiety dis-order. The patient telephones the health care provider after 4 days complaining that the drug is not working.

The anxiolytic effects of buspirone may not be evident for up to a week after beginning therapy with buspirone, and may not be maximal for a month.

Common symptoms of benzodiazepine withdrawal include elevated pulse rate, fatigue, ataxia, blurry vision, hyperreflexia, depression, and nausea.
