While counseling a patient with recurrent otitis externa, the nurse should include the instruction to:
 
  1. keep the ear canal free of cerumen.
  2. keep the canal as dry as possible.
  3. use cotton-tipped applicators to dry the ear.
  4. use ear plugs when showering.
