The caregiver of a patient calls to report, My mother just took her first dose of the prescribed opioid and became very nauseated. Select the nurse's best response.

  1. She is probably allergic to the agent and should discontinue it now.
  2. If the nausea is not as bad as the pain, she should continue the opioid as prescribed.
  3. This is generally a temporary effect and is lessened by keeping still.
  4. Try cutting the dose in half and take the medication on an empty stomach.

Question 2

Why are opioids contraindicated in patients with increased intracranial pressure (ICP)?

  1. Patients with ICP are more prone to dysphoria, which can be produced when opioids are first initiated.
  2. The sedation that opioids produce can last longer in patients with elevated ICP.
  3. Opioids can be given in patients with elevated ICP, although higher doses are required.
  4. Opioids suppress respirations and therefore increase the CO2 content of the blood, which will raise ICP more.
