Answer to Question 1

ANS: A
A lupuslike syndrome may occur with prolonged treatment; however, once the procainamide is discontinued, the symptoms resolve. The nurse should discuss the signs and symptoms of the lupuslike syndrome so that the patient can notify his health care provider, who will change his medication.
Hypertension, pulmonary fibrosis, and bronchospasm are not long-term effects of procainamide.

Answer to Question 2

ANS: B
The patient is displaying signs and symptoms of lidocaine toxicity, which is managed with diazepam or phenytoin.
Digoxin, verapamil, and quinidine are not indicated for the management of lidocaine toxicity.
