An elixir is ordered for a patient as 0.6 g every 4 hours. The medicine is available as 80 mg/5 mL. How many mL will the nurse give per dose?
 
  1. 3.75 mL
  2. 7.5 mL
  3. 28 mL
  4. 37.5 mL

Question 2

A patient comes into the clinic with complaints of a cold. He is also there for a flu shot. Why is a flu shot not recommended?

The process and formulas used to calculate dosages of liquids are the same as those used to compute dosages of capsules or tablets. Only the unit of measure is different. (0.6 g = 600 mg; 600 mg/80 mg = 7.5 x 5 = 37.5 mL.
