A patient receiving desmopressin is noted to be drowsy and listless and complains of a recent onset of headaches. The nurse is concerned about possible:
 
  a. water intoxication.
  b. hypernatremia.
  c. hypotension.
  d. hyperglycemia.

A patient tells the nurse that the prescriber has changed his medication from tacrine (Cognex) to donepezil (Aricept), and the patient wants to know why.

A
A major drawback of tacrine, besides liver damage, is that it has a very short half-life and must be dosed more often. Aricept is better tolerated and can be administered once a day.
Donepezil cannot reverse the degenerative process and improve cognitive functioning.
Donepezil does not have antidepressant properties.
Donepezil does have peripheral cholinergic effects.
