In 2011, a nitroglycerin in ointment form, Rectiv 0.4, was approved for the treatment of moderate to severe anal fissures. There is no documented benefit to the use of nitroglycerin to treat muscular dystrophy, pulmonary embolisms, or polycythemia.

The adrenal medulla is actually part of the sympathetic nervous system (SNS). It is a ganglion of neurons that releases the neurotransmitters norepinephrine and epinephrine into circulation when the SNS is stimulated.
