Answer to Question 1

The results really don't answer the basic question. On the surface it may show
that the longer the sentence the greater the risk of recidivating, which of course
would negate the deterrence hypothesis. However, it may be that those who had
longer sentences had more serious convictions or had more previous
incarcerations (which could have been the reason for the longer sentence).
Perhaps they were a less law-abiding group to begin with.
