Answer to Question 1

D
Feedback:
The patient has acute hypocalcemia as evidenced by numbness and tingling around the mouth and a positive Trousseau's sign. An intravenous calcium salt, such as calcium gluconate, is given for acute symptomatic hypocalcemia. Parenteral normal saline may be administered, but it will not increase the calcium level. The administration of potassium chloride parenterally must be diluted and will not affect the calcium level. Parenteral digoxin (Lanoxin) will not be administered.

Answer to Question 2

A
Feedback:
With the antacid Titralac (Tums), which contains calcium, it is important to observe for constipation. Combining this antacid with other antacids containing magnesium may prevent this effect. Frequency, fatty stools, and nausea are not noted adverse effects.
