Adults and children older than 8 years of age with symptomatic giardiasis are usually treated with oral metronidazole. The administration of sulfasalazine is used to treat ulcerative colitis. Trimethoprimsulfame thoxazole is used to treat urinary tract infections. Doxycycline is a tetracycline agent. It is not used for giardiasis.
