  B. Insert the airway with the curved end down along the curve of the tongue
  C. Use a tongue blade to insert and push the airway into position

A. Hold oral airway with curved end up, insert distal end until airway reaches back of throat, then turn airway over 180 degrees and follow natural curve of tongue.
B. In some clients it may be possible to depress tongue with tongue blade and insert airway with tip pointing down, sliding it over tongue.
C. Never push the airway into position.
D. Nurse may also hold airway sideways, insert halfway, and then rotate airway 90 degrees while gliding it over natural curvature of tongue.

C. Signs and symptoms include upper airway gurgling with respiratory cycle, no gag reflex, increased oral secretions or excretions, excessive drooling, grinding teeth, clenched teeth, biting of oral tracheal or gastric tubes, labored respirations, and increased respiratory rate.
A, B. This airway is only used with unconscious client because in conscious client the gag reflex causes vomiting or retching when something is placed in pharynx.
D. Never insert an oropharyngeal airway in a conscious client or a client with recent oral trauma, oral surgery, or loose teeth.
