B. If client has a surgical incision or localized area of discomfort, have client place hands firmly over affected area or place pillow over area. Splinting of painful area minimizes muscular stretching and discomfort during coughing and thus makes cough more productive.
A. For expectorant specimen, have client rinse mouth or brush teeth with water. Client should not use mouthwash or toothpaste because they may decrease viability of microorganisms and culture results.
C. Wait 1 to 2 hours after eating.
D. After a series of deep breaths, ask client to cough after full inhalation.
