A teacher records the test scores for the 40 students in her class. Corresponding to each score, she calculates a z-score. Julia's z-score is -2.8. Should she be concerned? Explain your reasoning.

Answer to Question 1

Answers will vary. Possible answer: Yes. Almost all z-scores lie between -3 and 3 so a z-score of -2.8 indicates that Julia's test score was lower than almost all of the other scores.

Answer to Question 2

A population is the complete collection of all individuals or items under consideration in a statistical study. A sample is that part of the population from which information is obtained.
