Answer to Question 1

Each prelude is its own world. Debussy suppresses his musical personality to portray the subjects of the preludes more vividly. In this way, he goes beyond earlier composers of program music; instead of preserving an individualistic style in each of his works, Debussy employed a variety of existing styles. The Minstrels prelude displays no consistent musical style: instead, we hear figures that evoke fiddle tunes, cabaret songs, and tambourine taps.
