Answer to Question 1

All of their phrases can be related to the four- and six-feel beat.

Answer to Question 2

There are three binary beats occurring at the same time two of the ternary beats are occurring. (Compare the six- and four-feel beats in the diagram above. 3:2 is occurring twice during each four- and six-feel beat: once during background units 1 2 3 4 5 6 and again during background units 7 8 9 10 11 12.) This is the power 3:2. (Be on the look out for other notated examples with rhythms based on 3:2 throughout the chapter.)
