 Violeta Parra was a multifaceted artist immersed in the folklore of Chile in the 1960s, and was a major figure in the Nueva Cancion movement. She democratized music and her songs spoke about people's problems and social problems. In Chile Violeta was a fundamental moving force in the development of la Nueva Cancin Chilena. . . . Her enormous collecting efforts significantly helped make Chilean folksongs legitimate and known on the national level.
