Using the principle of the diode, a simple full wave bridge rectifier can be configured to convert alternating current into direct current. Rectifiers are commonly used because many devices such as meters and control systems often require DC power. Power supplies for battery operated devices such as cell phones and laptop computers require AC to DC converters.
