Answer to Question 1

To prevent potentially dangerous backfires in the torch, acetylene is always ignited first and turned off last.
Open only the torch handle acetylene valve slightly and light the acetylene gas using a spark or flint lighter. This should produce an orange and slightly sooty flame.
After the torch lights increase the flow of acetylene until most of the smoke in the flame has disappeared.
Slowly open the oxygen valve counterclockwise. Increase the oxygen flow until the center cone is well defined and the feather completely disappears and joins the center cone. This is a neutral flame.

Answer to Question 2

Distilled water with corrosion inhibitors or glycol added.
