Answer to Question 1

The refrigerant is superheated from the end of the evaporator, through the compressor, up to the beginning of the condenser.

Answer to Question 2

The master thermostat determines the operational mode of the equipment. If the master is set to cool, a call for heat from one of the other thermostats will be ignored by the zone control.
