Answer to Question 1

Fractionation is the separation of refrigerant components in a zeotropic refrigerant when the refrigerant evaporates and condenses. This is why zeotropic refrigerants must leave the cylinder as a liquid, to avoid separating the components and changing the mixture of the refrigerant.

Answer to Question 2

The buffer tank smooths out, or buffers, the effect of changing heat loads. The buffer tank allows the system to store heat, so that amount of heat going into and out of the tank do not have to be exactly the same at all times.
