We can judge the age of a star cluster by looking at the turnoff point, the point on the main sequence where stars are currently evolving to the right to become giants. Stars at the turnoff point have lived out their lives and are about to die. Consequently, the life expectancy of the stars at the turnoff point equals the age of the cluster.
