Why can't galaxy evolution go from elliptical to spiral to irregular?

Answer to Question 1

An elliptical galaxy cannot become a spiral galaxy or an irregular galaxy because ellipticals contain almost no gas and dust from which to make new stars. That means elliptical galaxies can't be young galaxies. Spiral and irregular galaxies cannot evolve into elliptical galaxies because spiral and irregular galaxies contain old stars as well as young stars. The old stars tell you that spiral and irregular galaxies can't be young.
