Answer to Question 1

For life to begin, liquid water is needed. The Moon and Mercury are airless worlds, and water would boil away into space immediately.

Answer to Question 2

Fossils this old are difficult to recognize because the earliest living organisms did not contain easily preserved hard parts, like bones or shells, and because the ancient organisms were microscopic.
