A magnetosphere is a protective field surrounding a planet created by the magnetic field of the planet. The magnetic field diverts charged particles from the solar wind around the planet. Often, ions and electrons accumulate in areas of the magnetic field near the equatorial plane of the planet, called charged particle belts.
