How do most of the newly discovered solar systems and planets compare to our own?

Answer to Question 1

So far we have detected mostly large, massive jovian planets, and many of these planets have revolved very close to their home star, often at less than Mercury's distance from the Sun. This is probably a selection effect, with Doppler studies picking up massive, fast moving planets best.
