The organisms have shells made of calcium carbonate and collectively absorb
gigatonnes of carbon from the ocean after its transfer from the atmosphere.

Answer to Question 2

Plant matter is made of carbon from the atmosphere, and many gigatonnes of
vegetation do exist.
