A force F is exerted on an object of mass m through a distance d. A force twice as large (2F) is exerted on a mass 2m also through the distance d. Explain the relation between the amount of work done in the two cases.

Answer to Question 1

In this case, there are two possible answers.
(1) The force and displacement are parallel or antiparallel.
because the distance is the same, the force that is twice as large does twice the work.
(2) The force and displacement are perpendicular.
No work is done, no matter what.

Answer to Question 2

Electrons in the valence band are unable to move; electrons in the conduction band
can move in response to an electric field.
