One way to expand yields of crops is to increase the area under cultivation. This has few impacts other than an expansion of crop supply.

Answer to Question 1

As mentioned in short answer question 11 above, most of the desirable
agricultural land is already in production. Less desirable land remains that could be cropped,
but this entails difficulties. The land could be ruined permanently, irrigation could cause
problems, etc.

Answer to Question 2

Canada has a great deal of energy resources and the companies that own the
resources in Canada overlap substantially with companies owning U.S. resources. Mexico
nationalized its oil and Pemex, the Mexican monopoly oil company, is not as interested in
the U.S. market. Also, electricity use in Canada is much more like the U.S. Mexico has a
much larger proportion of poor citizens.
