Question 2

To investigate the nature of heat produced during the boring process, Count Rumford placed a dull boring tool and a brass cylinder in a barrel filled with cold water. The boring tool was forced against the bottom of the cylinder and rotated by two horses as shown in this figure. What would happen if the water used to cool the bore of the cannon were not replenished while the horses continued to provide mechanical energy?
 a. The temperature of the water would decrease as the temperature of the cannon bore increases.
  b. The temperature of the water would increase until it boils and evaporates.
  c. It would cause less resistance and the horses will not be able to transmit as much energy though work.
  d. Only a limited amount of heat can be extracted from the apparatus during a given session, so whether all the water boils away depends on how much water is used.
  e. Work and heat are distinct, so there is no significant effect on the water.

Every flu season is different, and even healthy people can get extremely sick from the flu, as well as spread it to others. The flu season can begin as early as October and last as late as May. Every person over six months of age should get an annual flu vaccine. The vaccine cannot cause you to get influenza, but in some seasons, may not be completely able to prevent you from acquiring influenza due to changes in causative viruses. The viruses in the flu shot are killed—there is no way they can give you the flu. Minor side effects include soreness, redness, or swelling where the shot was given. It is possible to develop a slight fever, and body aches, but these are simply signs that the body is responding to the vaccine and making itself ready to fight off the influenza virus should you come in contact with it.
