The BCS theory of superconductivity details the working of a superconductor. Choose the statement below that describes one of its characteristics.

a. Single electrons are responsible for establishing currents in the superconductor.
  b. Currents flow without resistance until the lattice begins to vibrate.
  c. The repulsion of electrons in pairs is significantly reduced by the extremely low temperatures of superconductor operation, making electron pairing possible.
  d. A pair of electrons becomes like a boson and transitions to a ground state with other electron pairs.

  e. The resistance decreases in proportion to the lattice vibrations, which in turn decrease with decreasing temperature.

Question 2

The Meissner effect in a superconductor

a. is lost higher than the Curie temperature.
  b. generates currents to counteract magnetic flux.
  c. makes the superconductor a perfect paramagnet below the critical field level.
  d. is independent of the zero resistivity property of a superconductor.
  e. can remain even after the temperature goes above the transition temperature.

Answer to Question 1

d.
The two fermionic electrons pair to form a boson, which does transition to the superconducting state. This state is similar to superfluid helium, the Bose-Einstein condensate.

Answer to Question 2

Because the electrical resistivity of a superconductor is zero, arbitrarily large currents generate within the superconductor to oppose any magnetic flux (up to a certain critical field) within the material. This is known as the Meissner effect.
b.

Pink eye is a term that refers to conjunctivitis, which is inflammation of the thin, clear membrane (conjunctiva) over the white part of the eye (sclera). It may be triggered by a virus, bacteria, or foreign body in the eye. Antibiotic eye drops alleviate bacterial conjunctivitis, and antihistamine allergy pills or eye drops help control allergic conjunctivitis symptoms.

The use of salicylates dates back 2,500 years to Hippocrates’s recommendation of willow bark (from which a salicylate is derived) as an aid to the pains of childbirth. However, overdosage of salicylates can harm body fluids, electrolytes, the CNS, the GI tract, the ears, the lungs, the blood, the liver, and the kidneys and cause coma or death.

Nearly all drugs pass into human breast milk. How often a drug is taken influences the amount of drug that will pass into the milk. Medications taken 30 to 60 minutes before breastfeeding are likely to be at peak blood levels when the baby is nursing.

Women are 50% to 75% more likely than men to experience an adverse drug reaction.

Did you know?

Ether was used widely for surgeries but became less popular because of its flammability and its tendency to cause vomiting. In England, it was quickly replaced by chloroform, but this agent caused many deaths and lost popularity.
