In order to train for a high-g environment, an astronaut is placed in a centrifuge of radius several meters and rotated in a horizontal circle at constant speed. In this situation, in which direction is the net force on the astronaut?
 a. The net force is down since gravity cannot be turned off.
  b. The net force is horizontal toward the center of the circle.
  c. The net force is between horizontal toward the center of the circle and straight up, the angle depending on the speed and the radius involved. d. The net force is zero since the astronaut is moving at constant speed and thus the force has no direction.

Blastomycosis is often misdiagnosed, resulting in tragic outcomes. It is caused by a fungus living in moist soil, in wooded areas of the United States and Canada. If inhaled, the fungus can cause mild breathing problems that may worsen and cause serious illness and even death.

About 80% of major fungal systemic infections are due to Candida albicans. Another form, Candida peritonitis, occurs most often in postoperative patients. A rare disease, Candida meningitis, may follow leukemia, kidney transplant, other immunosuppressed factors, or when suffering from Candida septicemia.

Chronic necrotizing aspergillosis has a slowly progressive process that, unlike invasive aspergillosis, does not spread to other organ systems or the blood vessels. It most often affects middle-aged and elderly individuals, spreading to surrounding tissue in the lungs. The disease often does not respond to conventionally successful treatments, and requires individualized therapies in order to keep it from becoming life-threatening.

Did you know?

Nearly all drugs pass into human breast milk. How often a drug is taken influences the amount of drug that will pass into the milk. Medications taken 30 to 60 minutes before breastfeeding are likely to be at peak blood levels when the baby is nursing.
