Distinguish between a high- and a low-pressure cell.

Question 2

Two coils are placed near each other as shown in Figure OQ31.9. The coil on the left is connected to a battery and a switch, and the coil on the right is connected to a resistor. What is the direction of the current in the resistor at an instant immediately after the switch is thrown closed?

Answer to Question 1

In a high-pressure cell the air is heavy and descending. The air at ground level is
leaving the cell to move to neighboring areas, and the air circulation is clockwise. In
a low-pressure cell the air is lighter and rising. The air from neighboring areas is
entering the cell at ground level, and the air circulation is counterclockwise around
the center of the cell.
