Explain the shape of the curve you have plotted.

A proton moving horizontally enters a region where a uniform magnetic field is directed perpendicular to the protons velocity as shown in Figure OQ29.4. After the proton enters the field, it
 
  1.is deflected downward, with its speed remaining constant.
  2.is deflected upward, moving in a semicircular path with constant speed, and exits the field moving to the left.
  3.continues to move in the horizontal direction with constant velocity.
  4.moves in a circular orbit and become trapped by the field.

Answer to Question 1

The graph of P versus 1/V is a straight line because pressure is inversely proportional
to the volume when the temperature is held constant. The reciprocal of the volume
thus shows a direct relationship to the pressure.
