Explain what causes the mercury in the glass thermometer to rise and fall with a change in temperature.

A metal wire of resistance R is cut into three equal pieces that are then placed together side by side to form a new cable with a length equal to one-third the original length. What is the resistance of this new cable?

Answer to Question 1

The mercury expands or contracts in volume when heat energy is added to or taken
from the mercury and this causes its heat to vary in the thermometer.
