Answer to Question 1

Answer: Eclipses occur with alignment of the Sun, Moon, and Earth. Both the Earth and Moon cast shadows into space due to illumination by the Sun. When the shadow of the Moon is incident on the Earth, observers in the shadow region witness a solar eclipse. When the shadow of the Earth is incident on the Moon, Earth observers witness a lunar eclipse.
