Answer to Question 1

Answer: Foliation is the realignment of minerals during recrystallization so that they are perpendicular to the direction of compressive force. Sedimentary layering is the result of the laying down of sediments one on top of the other.

Answer to Question 2

Answer: Metamorphic rocks are defined by texture: foliated and nonfoliated. The kind of rock produced depends on the parent rock and the grade of metamorphism. Foliated rocks include slate, schists, and gneisses. Nonfoliated rocks include marble and quartzite.
