Western societies have traditionally assigned greater importance to autonomy, independence, and identity while non-Western societies have generally placed greater emphasis on issues of relatedness as central factors in the mature personality. A counselor from the United States working with a female client from Pakistan might need to:
 
  a. refer the client to a different helper.
  b. learn more about the culture the woman comes from to help interpret theclient's behavior.
 c. focus on self-development issues to help the client fit in to the Americansociety.
