Self-disclosure on the part of the leader can be helpful in modeling how to self-disclose and take risks appropriately, as well as how to share thoughts and feelings with the group. Using self-disclosure can help group members to see the leader as more human and to relate to his or her shared experiences. The leader self-disclosing can be detrimental to group members when it is distracting or confusing to them, or if the focus shifts to the leader and he or she is trying to use the group to do personal work.
