 Job restructuring, stiff competition and layoffs force individuals to continuously rethink their career strategies and self-management.
 Climbing the corporate ladder is no longer a realistic goal for employees, whereas job-hopping is more common. This leads to a need to think outside of the box with respect to developing a personal career strategy.
 The workplace is more diverse, demanding for different interpersonal and communication skills.
 Company loyalty is no longer as valued by employees or employers, which impacts job security.

1 . In early career, one is projecting self-concept into a work environment.
2 . One seeks an opportunity for self-expression.
3 . One seeks to establish oneself in the workplace.
4 . There is a search for a defined future direction.
5 . Middle career is considered to be the beginning of the maintenance stage.
6 . One is settling in and has developed a greater understanding of self.
7 . One has now developed a means of identification within the total working system.
8 . In late career, one becomes even more concerned about job performance.
9 . Late career usually means changing relationships in the workplace.
10 . The major concerns are age discrimination, health concerns, family matters, and when to retire.
