 Career development theorists believe that there are numerous variables that guide and determine career progression leading to career choices and multiple choices over the life span. Abilities, interests, values, and personality are among those mentioned as characteristics that influence individual choice.
 Within this group of variables Holland's topology research on interest patterns have been emphasized, he sees congruence between one's interests and occupation type makes for a good fit. It appears that the more interest one has in certain career variables the more he will be motivated to show interest in the career and be motivated to exhibit a positive progression leading to that career choice.
